Wake Forest: Urban Neighbors & A Small-Town Feel

Just 10 short miles north of Raleigh and about 3 hours from Washington D.C., Wake Forest is a small community that celebrates a rural setting with the benefits of city living. Quick access to The Research Triangle Park and many of the areas universities, Wake Forest is only a few short hours from either the beach or the mountains.

This tight community, "where neighbors know neighbors," has an excellent location coupled with a small town feel. With a population of about 36,000, the town has many accommodations, fine dining, attractions, and more.

Wake Forest University is in Winston-Salem?

With its roots solidly anchored in the foundation of Wake Forest College, the town was founded in 1820. Dr. Calvin Jones sold his farm to the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute, which later became Wake Forest College. The Raleigh & Gaston Railroad operated a depot in nearby Forestville, which contributed to the success of the school.

The town became known as the "Town of Wake Forest College" in 1880. By 1910 the word "College" was removed and the town became "Wake Forest." The relocation of the University to Winston-Salem, in 1956, has caused some minor confusion to people who are not from North Carolina - as the town kept the name.
